Google Picasa or Windows Live Photo Gallery - Which is Better?

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Like Picasa from Google, Windows Live Photo Gallery is free desktop software from Microsoft for managing your pictures and videos - the software works on both XP and Windows Vista.

Having worked with both the software for some time now, here’s a quick review and comparison of Windows Live Photo Gallery with Picasa (do not confuse Picasa desktop software with Picasa Web Albums).

editing photos

Round 1: Interface & Ease of Use - Both Picasa and Windows Live Photo Gallery have a pleasant and intuitive interface with basic photo editing capabilities. You can zoom, rotate, search, add ratings, tags and text captions to your photographs very easily. In Picasa, it is possible to select multiple images from different file folders by holding then on to the image tray but in Windows Photo Gallery, you can select images only from the current folder.

Round 2: Speed - When it comes to speed, Windows Photo Gallery wins over Picasa by a huge margin. Picasa, in the last few months, has become extremely slow - the software sometimes even freezes while importing new media content into the library. Windows Live Photo Gallery is lightning fast when you compare the start-up speed or when it process new photographs.

Round 3: Screen Saver - Picasa Screensaver (now known as the Google Photos Screensaver) allows you to add live photo streams (like Flickr RSS Feeds, Yahoo! News Photos) while in Windows Live Photo Gallery, only the local photos appear in the slideshow. Unlike Windows Live Screensaver, Google Picasa Screensaver supports dual monitor screen - alternate photos appear simultaneously on both the screens.

download pictures from camera

Round 4: Download Video Clips, Pictures from Digital Camera - Windows Live Photo Gallery taken an intelligent approach here - the moment you connect your still camera to the computer, Windows Gallery will logically group the photos based on the date when the photos where clicked. That makes selecting and transferring photos from the camera to the hard drive a snap. And unlike Picasa, Windows Live Photo Gallery is again very fast.

Round 5: Bells & Whistles - There are some features which are unique to both the photo management software. Picasa lets you create large wall posters from your images, photo collages, web galleries or even small movie clips from your still photos. You get none of this in Windows Live Photo Gallery but for an excellent Photo Stitcher that will help you build panoramic photos automatically or even Google Maps wallpapers.

 google-photo-collage

Round 6: Integration with External Services - In Picasa, you can upload images to Picasa Web Albums, videos to Google Videos or photo blog in Blogger. In Windows Live Photo Gallery, pictures can be uploaded to Windows Live Spaces while videos go to MSN Soapbox, a YouTube like video sharing services from Microsoft.

Flickr vs Picasa Web - Which is better for Storing Images.

Conclusion - Windows Live Photo Gallery is extremely fast and efficient. It works so well when it comes to downloading photographs from the digital camera. You can also this as the default image viewer on Windows.

Picasa is a solid application with pretty good features but very slow. If speed is not a concern and you are a Blogger or Picasa Web Albums user, this may be the way to go.

Free Hindi Movies

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

I’m always on the look out for free Hindi movies. I became a big fan when I went out with a group of friends at work. Wow! What a difference. I loved every minute of it.

Indian movies are just spectacular! My friends first treated me to a Bollywood film. Bollywood is the informal name that’s been given to the Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India. It is really popular, but it just represents a part of the diverse Indian cinema. Most of the Bollywood films are musicals - but while there is a similarity to the musical films of other countrys, these films go far beyond anything I have ever seen. The song and dance numbers are some of the most amazing ever filmed! Be prepared for the setting to change abruptly and the characters instantly changing costumes between song verses. The actors and actresses are all excellent dancers. Most of the singing is done by professional singers and lip-synched in the movie. They often release the soundtrack before the movie is released. Remixed versions (complete with modern beats & rhythms) of older film songs are extremely popular. (And a lot of fun to listen to!) I found a place online to get movies and soundtracks called CDstore.in. They have a lot of movies and cds.

I thought that it would be hard to find theaters showing them, but there are movie theaters all over the world showing a wide range of Indian films. A search of the Yellow Pages directory of Immihelp.com shows over 150 movie theaters in the United States alone showing Indian films and the number is growing! Check their list and see if there is a Indian Movie Theater near you. You will not be disappointed! Most of these theaters show Hindi but the number of theaters offering regional films (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam) are increasing.

I’m lucky to live in the Chicago area where there are eleven theaters (that I know of) that show Indian films. Even so, I have joined the search for the free Hindi movie online! It’s rough, I’ve found little snippets here and there on YouTube.com, but the quality varies and I don’t have the patience to view one after another after another. You can, however, find a lot of the songs on YouTube. And those are a lot of fun!

I have found free Hindi movies online but a lot of them are poor quality or they have some TV Channel logo in the corner. I’d like to see the whole movie, please! In the absence of completely free Hindi movies, I have found some good and really inexpensive movie download sites that have a really good choice of films (and they have the MP3 files and games if you want them.) Those sites are keeping me going while I continue my search for elusive free Hindi movies!

British PM Tony Blair in Shekhar Kapur’s Global Cool

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

British Prime Minister Tony Blair has made his movie debut in a short film about climate change awareness, which is directed by Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

The 54-year-old outgoing premier plays a “carbon crusader” in the film, titled Global Cool , that also stars Hollywood’s blonde beauties Sienna Miller and Heather Graham. The film was premiered at the International Indian Film Academy awards ceremony at Yorkshire and Amitabh Bachchan also has an important role in it.

Blair said he has been preparing for the role for more than a decade and he felt great to be a part of the film.

“I’ve been preparing for this role for the last ten years. So It was great to be part of Global Cool. But remember, I was only one of a billion people saving the planet in this movie — and they are all stars,” Blair said.
